Copyright Commercial Appeal

The final Final Edition of the Memphis Press-Scimitar is viewed as it came off the presses at 495 Union Avenue by Durwood Wilburn on 31 Oct 1983. The final edition came off the presses at precisely 3:16 p.m. Although the newspaper's circulation had dropped to 74,000, special requests for the collector's item increased the final press run to 125,000 newspapers. In addition to the day's news, the final edition numbered 38 pages and carried farewell stories from various members of the staff, a letter from President Reagan and a letter from Milton R. Britten, the editor. Splashed above the masthead in blocky, red letters were the words, "FINAL EDITION." The newspaper began publication in 1880. Bill Kelley III / The Commercial Appeal files.
